The Trees

November 2000

Deb heard about a special program funded by the US Forest Service. We bought 250 seedlings for about 50 cents apiece.
These same kinda seedlings are used by the Forest Service to replant after a wildfire.
The thought is that even if most of them don't make it, we'll still get our money's worth.

We bought some trees that had low or moderate water requirements. We also bought a few bushes to experiment with. We tried a few different locations: some we planted on hillsides and some we planted in valleys and ravines.

I used a spud bar to dig the holes and Deb planted the trees. I watered them after Deb was done. The soil was fairly moist due to the recent rains we had this last fall.

I tried to place rocks and logs around the seedlings to keep the cows from trampling them.

We planted a couple rows of Arizona Cypress trees around the shower to act as a windbreak.

Deb wanted honeysuckle bushes next to the cabin.
I dumped some ashes around them for fertilizer.

Not that there's a shortage of fertilizer....

...and in the evening we had our first thanksgiving dinner...
We had roast chicken, stovetop stuffing and - most important - pumpkin pie!
