Climbing Kilimanjaro

We started on a Friday.
No, actually we left the house on a Thursday.
Well now, my journey began on a Saturday

...but...

I really began last June
running
...no, walking
...and jogging

Mt Kilimanjaro from Amboseli National Park

I found out in about 3 minutes just how out of shape I was. I woke up a half hour early every other day and eventually made it to the point where I was running for about a half hour straight. I did not try to break any speed records because I was not about to develop knee problems like my sister. So I ran slowly – maybe a fast jog. Perhaps 8 miles an hour.

There were a couple weeks I got sick and didn't run but for the most part, I ran. I even bought real running shoes, which is something I've NEVER done. Up til now, I'd bought tennis shoes at Wal-mart. I paid $100 for these running shoes.

In the fall, our company had a promotion with activities centered around healthy living. One of the activities was to climb Squaw Peak in Phoenix. I was introduced to new muscles. It was a real eye opener. I learned I needed to divide my exercises between running and stair climbing. So every other morning I would do a kind of step aerobics on our low block wall in the front yard. I also started climbing the stairs at work – 17 floors to my office – 284 steps. Until they locked the door to the stairwell on the ground floor due to “heightened security.”
