Labor Day 2001

The Damrons visited us over the Labor Day weekend. They're the ones who gave us the used and paving bricks. We all used to work together at Universal Propulsion Company (UPCo). We still get together every week or so.

We shot a few rounds out of Al's 22 bolt action and a military surplus shotgun he acquired that kicked like a mule. That's a weapon you learn to shoot from the hip...definitly. Here we are cleaning our guns afterward.
Al mentioned that the property would be a good place to shoot off model rockets - so I bought one. On the second shot, I put a little too much wading in and blew the engine mount out the back end. We searched all over for it and gave up. Then, while we were cleaning the guns, I looked up and saw the engine mount lying not 30 feet away from the picnic table. We shot this one off three more times before the shock cord broke.

It was difficult to see the driveway this time. It had apparently rained alot the last couple months.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a disease or insects attacking our pinon trees.

I noticed a great deal of sap around the trunks.
We don't have many pinons, but almost all of them turned brown since the last time we were here.

After researching it a bit, I suspect bark beetles, but I'll need to cut open one of the dead trees to find out.

We saw these caterpillers everywhere up there. They're all 3 to 4 inches long and as big around as my pinkie finger. I suppose there will be a plague of giant moths diving into the fire next spring!

Al and I partied half the night and I took him on a midnight hike wherein he kinda misplaced his marguerita glass. Here we are hunting for it the next day. We found it fairly close to the campfire cause we weren't in good condition for a very long hike that night...

I learned that at Dragonsnest, the neighbors are far enough away that primal screams are acceptable. ...of course screaming is not very much encouraged the morning after...
